FEZ Game Variations

For a bit of variety try these variations of gameplay.

  • No Discard – Each player does not have to discard a card before restocking their hand.
  • No Layoffs – Laying off is not allowed.
  • Multi-Layoffs – Layoffs against the original word and already extended words are all allowed. ‘PLAYs’ and ‘PLAYing’ are both allowed against the played word ‘PLAY’.
  • Call FEZ – Same as regular FEZ, except any player may call for a newly discarded card. The player calls ‘FEZ’ and if more than 1 player calls, the winner is the player who can make the highest score with that card. Play then continues from the player who called FEZ.
  • 1 Card Draw – Deal 5 cards as normal to each player, to be held in the hand and then to each player 2 draw cards; 1 face down and 1 face up on the table. Each player then decides which one of the 2 draw cards to use to make the best scoring hand from the 6 cards. Each player calls ‘FEZ’ when they have the hand(s) they are going to play. When all players have called ‘FEZ’, they all show their hands. Obviously no layoffs are allowed and normal FEZ scoring applies, including all flush bonuses.
  • 2 Card Draw – Same as 1 Card Draw but each player is dealt 3 draw cards, 2 face down and 1 face up, with the face up card in between the 2 face down cards.
  • Quick Draw – Same as 1 or 2 Card Draw above, but each player has only 1 minute to decide on their hand.
  • Minimum Word Length – Decide before play starts the minimum word length allowed.
  • Declare All Flush Intent – After playing their first hand, a player can declare their intention to get an all flush bonus(all flush words). If they succeed, they get +60pts instead of +30pts, if they fail, they lose 30pts from their final score!
  • Declare 7 Letter Bonus Intent – After cards are dealt and before any player has seen their cards, players declare if they intend to get a specified number of 7 letter bonuses. If they succeed they are given an additional double word score for each 7+ letter word they make, if they fail they halve their highest scoring word score for each failed intent.
