Pt2 – “Get ready for a major re-model fellas, we’re back in hardware mode”

Time to build a game

Whilst waiting for the cards to arrive on Monday I decided to write a program that would randomly select digrams from the list I’d created, assigning each letter to one of 2 colours making sure there were an equal number. Again I didn’t quite know why I did that, but in hindsight I was just conditioned. 52 playing cards come in 2 suit colours, black and red so why not follow suit! 🤦🏼‍♂️

I knew random wasn’t the way to go but it would give me a starter pack that I could tweak manually.

I followed the lead of other word games and had a blank, actually since each card has 2 letters, I should have 2 blanks, but not together. I also added a double score for variability and an element of luck.

I knew I needed to balance the cards, equal number of reds and blacks, so my program chugged away making sure that the packs had equal reds and blacks. It threw some random sets at me…

The reds and blacks were balanced but looking at the list of 10 packs it randomly generated why not just use 13 all reds, 13 all blacks and 26 bi-coloured cards! 🤦🏼‍♂️ I was just too excited about getting some cards I didn’t think straight! 🧐

I opened the box, found a red and black pen and started copying the letters from one of the packs!

The very first cards!

You can see my scribbles on some of the cards with the number of words that digram is used in. and on the ‘DM’ card I was looking at alternative letters. I mean ‘DM’, c’mon hands up 👋 anybody who knows just 1 word with DM in!! There are 424 & 63 with ‘MD’ in!

I knew random wasn’t the way to go but it gave me the start. Look at the ‘RH’ too! Rhyme and rheostat are all I can think of, off the top of my head. There are some that are still in the pack as it stands now, ‘ES’, ‘IP’, ‘RE’ and ‘_A’, the ‘_’ is a blank. I played the game myself and it had something going for it, I just needed to sort out the letters.

Before trying to sort out the letters I had one more game,… then it happened.

I didn’t have the concept of word flushes at this time and it wouldn’t have mattered cos the ‘Z’ is red, but the score of 60pts was the highest I’d scored by miles! Hardly surprising with letters like ‘DM’ and ‘RH’.

I shuffled through the cards and realised this was the highest word possible with just 3 cards, the vague working name of “Word Rummy” didn’t even make it 2 days, FEZ was born.
